House of Roots and Bones: BMCB The Five Books of Moses

BIG MAMA’S CONJURE BIBLE STUDIES DEPARTMENT

THE FIVE BOOKS OF MOSES

Foundation, Law & Deliverance

BMCB BCH 101 — Genesis: Beginnings, Bloodlines, Blessings & Family Altars

This foundational course reads Genesis through creation, naming, land, family, bloodline, inheritance, dreams, wells, altars, covenants, sibling conflict, migration, fertility, blessing, and generational consequence. Students examine Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, Leah, Rachel, and Joseph while exploring the spiritual significance of names, spoken blessings, dreams, burial places, and family lines. The course establishes the Biblical language of family, land, promise, and inheritance required throughout Big Mama’s Conjure Bible Studies.

BMCB BCH 102 — Exodus: Get Free and Stay Free

This foundational course examines Exodus through oppression, deliverance, Moses, signs, blood at the doorway, confrontation with Pharaoh, crossing water, wilderness survival, sacred law, provision, and communal freedom. Black American interpretations of Exodus during slavery, segregation, church life, preaching, freedom struggle, and spiritual practice receive sustained attention. Students learn that deliverance involves more than getting out because the formerly oppressed must also learn how to live after bondage. The course establishes liberation as one of the department’s central Biblical themes.

BMCB BCH 103 — Leviticus: Clean, Unclean, Holy & Set Apart

This foundational course examines Leviticus through holiness, cleanliness, contamination, sacrifice, blood, bodily conditions, sacred boundaries, priestly responsibility, restitution, and restoration of communal order. Students learn the historical and theological context of Israelite ritual law before drawing comparisons with later spiritual cleansing practices. The distinction between ritual impurity, moral wrongdoing, physical illness, and modern ideas of spiritual contamination is carefully explored. The course provides essential preparation for later study of cleansing, baths, healing, and spiritual responsibility.

BMCB BCH 104 — Numbers: Wilderness Lessons, Rebellion & Spiritual Order

This course examines Numbers through wilderness movement, census, camps, leadership, rebellion, complaining, serpents, prophetic speech, blessing, cursing, community order, and the consequences of refusing instruction. Students study what happens when people have physically left bondage but have not yet developed the discipline necessary to sustain freedom. Balaam’s attempts to curse Israel receive particular attention as a Biblical study of blessing, spiritual opposition, prophetic speech, and divine jurisdiction. The course prepares students to understand wilderness as both historical setting and enduring Biblical metaphor for difficult transition.

BMCB BCH 105 — Deuteronomy: Remember What the Lord Taught You

This course completes the Pentateuch by examining remembrance, memory, law, blessing, curse, land, inheritance, covenant, obedience, teaching children, and transmitting sacred knowledge. Students study the repeated command to remember as a theological principle connecting survival to historical memory. The course considers how knowledge is preserved through repetition, household instruction, public recitation, story, law, and communal practice. Deuteronomy closes the foundational sequence by teaching that freedom can be lost when a people forget what brought them through.
